Agreement reached to delay rail closure

Maintenance on the East Market Street rail crossing is being pushed back until the main detour reopens, Mayor Todd Barton said Monday.

After days of talks, the City of Crawfordsville reached an agreement with CSX Transportation and the Indiana Department of Transportation to delay closing the crossing until construction on East Wabash Avenue is finished. That work is scheduled to wrap up in mid-August.

Last week, the city announced it would sue CSX and INDOT in Montgomery County Court to keep the crossing open after CSX initially refused to postpone the project. The crossing was slated to close for five days starting Thursday.

The city argued that starting the project with East Wabash still closed “created significant concern about the impact to traffic flow and safety.”

Crawfordsville later agreed to stay out of court as talks among the sides continued through the weekend into Monday.

CSX “has agreed to delay their project to ensure our public safety concerns are adequately addressed,” Barton said in a news release.

“I would like to publicly thank CSX and INDOT for their continued dialogue and attention to this issue of great importance and commend them for taking action to be a good partner in our community,” Barton added.
