Annexation requests move forward

Posted

Two parcels of land on the city’s south side moved forward in the annexation process.

Members of the annexation committee of the Crawfordsville Common Council met Monday to consider a fiscal plan resolution as well as ordinance to annex the two properties. The first parcel is 5.64 acres at 1812 S. U.S. 231, which is the site of Stevenson Ace Hardware. The second parcel is 68.35 acres of farm ground located on County Road 150S, owned by the Ruth A. Leaming Living Trust.

Mayor Todd Barton explained there is a purchase agreement in place for the larger parcel, but developers need assurance from the city there will be sewer services available. The future of that property is expected to be residential. Barton said the city is working with county officials to extend the Puple Heart Parkway to the east toward Ladoga Road, giving developers access to a thoroughfare on the property’s south side.

A previously annexed parcel of property located between these two parcels also will benefit from a road extension and city services, Barton said.

Barton told the annexation committee the owners of the Stevenson property also initiated the annexation petition, and they too will benefit from city services, allowing for growth and expansion of that business.

“This really cleans things up on the south side,” Barton said.

The proposed annexation is expected to add $1 million in assessed value to the city, and will not cost the city.

The annexation committee moved both the fiscal plan resolution and the annexation ordinance to the full council with a favorable recommendation.

In other business, the fiscal affairs committee moved an additional appropriation of $259,981 from the Local Road and Bridge Fund forward to the full council with a favorable recommendation. The funds will be used as the city’s contribution, or dollar for dollar match, for a grant it received as part of the Community Crossing Paving Program. The funds will be used this summer to replace a small structure on Big Four Arch Road near Schenck Road.

The full council will meet at 6 p.m. Monday in the council chambers at the City Building, 300 E. Pike St.
