Area GBB teams find out post-season draw

Posted

This past Sunday the Indiana High School Athletic Association held its annual pairings show for the girls basketball post-season. All four of our area teams found out their path to a sectional title. Let’s see where our teams are headed and who their opponents are.

Class A Sectional 54 @ Attica

The Fountain Central Mustangs are in the midst of one of their best seasons in recent memory and now FC looks to carry that momentum into post-season play. Attica is the host for the six-team sectional which includes No. 5 ranked Clinton Central (20-1), Rossville (11-10), Faith Christian (11-10), North Vermillion (10-11), along with the 16-4 Mustangs and 7-11 host Red Ramblers.

FC drew the Eagles of Faith Christian in the opening game which will take place next Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 6 p.m. The winner between the Eagles and Mustangs will get the team to beat in the sectional with the Bulldogs awaiting in next Friday’s semi-finals. Way back in the opening game of the season, Fountain Central defeated Faith Christian 45-41.

North Vermillion and Rossville play in game two with the winner taking on Attica in the second semi-final on Friday. The sectional championship is scheduled for next Saturday night at 6 p.m. FC is in search of its first sectional title since the 2014-15 season.

Class 2A Sectional 44 @ South Putnam

Southmont will make the trip to South Putnam for the seven-team Class 2A Sectional 44. The 12-7 Mounties are joined by 9-12 Greencastle, 2-19 Cloverdale, 6-14 Riverton Parke, 8-12 North Putnam, 19-3 Parke Heritage, and the 12-9 host Eagles.

The Mounties will be in the bottom half of the bracket and will look to avenge an earlier loss when they take on South Putnam in game two next Wednesday. Back on Nov. 20, the Mounties fell 49-41 to the Eagles. The winner between those teams will face the winner of Parke Heritage and Cloverdale in the semi-finals. The top half of the bracket sees a pair of Putnam County rivals square off with Greencastle and North Putnam in game one with the winner taking on Riverton Parke who drew the lone bye into the semis.

The Wolves come in as the prohibitive favorites but the Mounties will likely get their chance to knock them off if they can take down the Eagles in round one.

Class 3A Sectional 22 @ Twin Lakes

North Montgomery gets in the middle of arguably the most loaded sectional in Class 3A. The Chargers are a much improved team from a year ago with a record of 8-14. The seven-team sectional features three of the top 11 ranked teams in 3A with No. 3 Rensselaer Central (19-1), No. 6 Benton Central (21-3), and No. 11 Western (15-4). Other teams in the sectional include 12-9 West Lafayette, 11-9 host Twin Lakes, and 1-20 Frankfort.

The Chargers will get a tough test with the sixth-ranked Bison in the opening round next Wednesday in game two. The winner will face either Twin Lakes or Western in Friday’s semi-finals. The third ranked Bombers got the bye into the semis and will either see the Red Devils or Hot Dogs in the first semi-final on Friday.

Class 3A Sectional 25 @ Cascade

Five of the eight Sagamore Conference teams make up the Class 3A sectional 25 field which includes the Crawfordsville Athenians. CHS is joined by 18-3 Danville, 11-9 Monrovia, 11-9 Tri-West, 9-13 Lebanon, 10-10 Cascade, and 9-11 Western Boone.

CHS will get the Bruins in round one on Wednesday in game two with the winner facing either WeBo or Lebanon. Danville drew the bye and awaits either Cascade or Monrovia in the semi-finals.
