Athenian Volleyball gets much needed win

Crawfordsville now has the monkey off its back after snapping a five-game losing streak on Thursday as CHS got a 3-0 win over the Attica Red Ramblers 25-20, 25-20, 25-18.

The win is the second of the season against Attica after the Athenians defeated them back in the North Putnam Early Bird Invite 2-1.

“Tonight just felt really good,” first-year CHS coach Allison Manwell said. “The girls were happy with how they played and it was even better that we could do it here at home.”

What was also on display was the Athenians serve-game. Reese Price had six aces in the CHS win with Claire Peacock adding three. Ally Strickland racked up nine kills with Devan Johnson adding six and Molly Grace Whitecotton tallying five. Peacock and Strickland also split assists with Peacock having 12 and Strickland 11. Whitecotton showed her presence at the net with a pair of blocks while Emma Buser finished with six digs and Peacock four.

“We’ve been really working on serving the last few weeks,” Manwell said. “Our defense has been a weak spot early on so we’ve tried to steal some points with our serves. It was on display tonight and got us some much needed points.”

Early in set two Cville found themselves down 14-8 but a timeout by Manwell proved to be exactly what CHS needed to stem the tide. They responded with six straight points to even the set at 14-14 all and with the score still knotted at 20-20, the Athenians scored the final five to win the set.

“We’ve been messing around with some different lineups and formations and tonight what we were doing worked,” Manwell added. “I thought Devan (Johnson) was playing with a lot more confidence and was really strong at the net for us along with Katy Whitecotton. Our play at the front of the net tonight got the girls going. I think you can see this team starting to really play a lot better. We’re starting to slowly build that momentum that we’ve been wanting as we come up on some pretty important conference games.”

Cville improves to 3-8 on the season while Attica falls to 3-6. The Athenians will be back in action on Tuesday with a trip to North Vermillion before welcome a very talented opponent and sectional foe to CHS in West Lafayette before competing in the Greenwood Invite next Saturday.
