Crawfordsville and Fountain Central both saw areas they were pleased with in week one despite both teams falling in their games last Friday. Crawfordsville was bested by Heritage Christian while the Mustangs were defeated by Southmont. Coming into week two Cville and FC will both look to get that first win of 2023 when the Athenians make the trip to Veedersburg.
A year ago in this matchup the Athenians were able to squeak out a 27-20 win despite FC out-gaining them 339-223.
This season both teams have new faces from that game a year ago as Cville has senior QB Kaden Patton under center with the Mustangs turning to a freshman in Eli Foxworthy. Both teams learned some lessons after week one that they’re using in practice this week to make sure they’re good to go for Friday.
“It was a mixed bag last week,” Crawfordsville coach Brad Clark said. “That’s the biggest takeaway from week one for me is that we need to be a little more consistent play after play and series after series. It was good to show our kids that on film this week to what we need to do to beat good opponents.”
Patton in the week one loss for CHS did throw for 162 yards and one TD. Just a tick over half those yards came from senior wide out Ethan McLemore who hauled in eight passes for 82 yards while Sam Minnette had five receptions for 48 yards and the one score.
In the loss to Southmont Foxworhty went 7-22 for 155 yards and a score with his main target being senior Owen Acton who scored the games first touchdown with a 66 yard catch and run. Acton finished with 103 yards through the air on five catches.
“Blue and Acton both hurt us on the ground last year in that game,” Clark said. “You can expect to see a heavy dose of them again so that’s something that we’re prepping for. Foxworthy is a kid who I got a look at last year against our middle school team and you can see he’s done some nice things. For us we have to do a good job of adjusting to what their defense is giving us. We did a good job of that in the second half last week and we saw some good things happen.”
Kickoff between the Athenians and Mustangs has already been moved back an hour to an 8 p.m. kickoff due the expected heat. The game will be broadcast live on Thunder 103.9 WIMC beginning at 7:30 as Deontae Peete and Codey Emerson will have the call from Veedersburg.
