For the third time in four years of the Sugar Creek Classic, the Crawfordsville Athenians have been crowned the champion after a 42-33 victory over North Montgomery in the title game Saturday in their home gym.
The Athenians (4-7) trailed the Chargers (4-7) for three quarters until a Mason McCarty three-pointer tied the game at 27 just one minute into the fourth quarter. The rest of the fourth quarter was close with a couple of ties and lead changes, but the Athenians took the lead for good on three-pointer from junior Cohen McClamroch with 3:38 remaining. The Athenians would extend the lead with another three-pointer and some clutch free throws to finish the game.
“I thought for us to come out tonight and get the win after a huge victory over Southmont last night was great,” said Crawfordsville Head Coach, David Pierce. “Usually you have a let down after a big win, but tonight we executed what we wanted to do. Kudos to North for slowing the game down and taking us out of playing fast.”
The Athenians held the Chargers to only 12 points scored in the second half. “The kids were gritty,” Pierce said. “I thought we did a great job on their guys, and they only scored 12 points in the second half. That is a great defensive performance and very gritty, especially when you aren’t getting a lot of shot opportunities. I’m just super proud.”
Leading all scorers was McCarty with 15. Other scorers for the Athenians were Johnovan Smith with 9, Cohen McClamroch 6, Alec Saidian 6 and Jakob Lee 6.
North Montgomery was led in scoring by senior Kelby Harwood with 12 points.
“I thought our guys played hard and did an excellent job at following the game plan,” said Charger Coach Chad Arnold. “Our defense was solid all night. Hopefully we can use this game and continue to get better. Congratulations to Crawfordsville. Coach Pierce and his staff always have their teams prepared and ready to play.”
The 2025 Sugar Creek Classic All-Tourney team was Mason McCarty, MVP, Crawfordsville, Johnovan Smith, Crawfordsville, Kelby Harwood, North Montgomery, Vince Reimondo, Southmont and Gavin Hawkins, Western Boone.
North Montgomery plays Friday at Danville in a boy-girl doubleheader, while Crawfordsville is off until Jan. 24 when they play Fountain Central and then rematch with the Mounties on Jan. 25.
MOUNTIES WIN CONSOLATION GAME
The Southmont Mounties (7-2) defeated the Western Boone Stars 84-66 in a dominating offensive and defensive performance in the consolation game of the Sugar Creek Classic.
The Mounties led from start to finish and consistently widened their lead in the game. Southmont led by 46-31 at the half and 64-52 after three quarters.
Mountie Vince Reimondo led all scorers with 25 points. Evan Watson contributed 17, Aaron McMasters 12, and Austin Foley with 11. The Mounties had eight players break into the scoring column.
“I’m proud of the way the boys bounced back,” said Southmont Coach Michael Byrum. “We had a very disappointing outing Friday night. No one was happy about the results, but I’m proud of the way we refocused and came out less than 24 hours later and win like we did.”
Senior Gavin Hawkins led the Stars with 24 points.
The Mounties will host Seeger and Riverton Parke this weekend on Friday and Saturday.
