Crawfordsville baseball found themselves on a mini two-game skid after CHS was swept by Tri-West earlier this week. On Saturday the Athenians welcomed another Sagamore Conference foe in Lebanon to CHS as the Tigers and Athenians clashed in a key SAC contest. Entering the bottom of the sixth Cville and the Tigers were tied 3-3. What followed was the Athenians using a 5-run sixth to propel to them to an 8-5 win to get back on track.
The first four batters in that sixth inning reached base when Kaden Patton got things started with a single. Dylan Farley reached on an error and Bryce Dowell was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Wyatt Motz continued to swing a hot bat for CHS when he laced a single that scored both Patton and Farley. Another Tiger error followed by a ground out and wild pitch scored the final runs of the inning.
Lebanon didn’t back down quietly as back-to-back singles gave them a chance with the tying run at the plate. Patton then made a lunging catch out in right field to save the game and seal the Athenian win.
“That sixth inning was big because we needed that cushion,” Crawfordsville coach Brett Motz said. “Kaden Patton just made an awesome catch in right field to seal it for us. We gave ourselves a chance to continue to chase for a conference championship and we continue to tell our guys how important every single game is the rest of the way.”
Crawfordsville (10-4 3-2 SAC) had nine hits in the win. AJ Hall, Kale Wemer, and Motz all had two with Motz and Wemer also having a pair of RBI’s. Cale Coursey, Dowell and Patton all had a hit each.
For the Tigers (5-6 3-2 SAC) they actually out-hit Cville with 10 hits. Cannon Morton had a 3-4 day at the plate with a double and triple. Corbin Wells was the one to even up the game a 3-3 in the top of the sixth with a two-run home run.
Coursey on the mound picked up the win as the senior went 6.1 innings allowing seven hits and four earned runs. He struck out 10 while walking just two.
Crawfordsville now turns their focus to Tuesday and Wednesday where they will stay right here in Montgomery County when they take on county rival Southmont.
CHS will travel to New Market on Tuesday before welcoming the Mounties on Wednesday.
