Athenians look for continued success

Posted

Crawfordsville girls tennis has had much success in the area the last few seasons. CHS has won two straight sectional titles and eyes a three-peat as they begin their 2023 campaign.

This year’s Athenian team will look slightly different than last year as CHS has to replace four seniors in Reese Minnette at two singles, Harmony Taylor at three singles, and the No. 1 doubles team of Cathleen McGrady and Lilly Klingbeil.

Despite having some holes to fill, second-year coach Kara Amundson believes in her team to be able to continue their success this year.

“The team gives it their all in practice everyday, which makes practice highly effective,” she said. “From there, you just hope it carries into competition. We just take each match one at a time. We do have some holes to fill  but the players who are stepping into those open spots are going to try their best to hopefully get us some of those wins.”

Crawfordsville does return junior Samantha Rohr at one singles from a year ago and the doubles team of senior Elyse Widmer and Mia Wagner who played two doubles a year ago, but will likely bump up to one doubles.

Having the experience back at both one spots for the Athenians gives them two positions Amundson feels confident in as the year gets underway.

“Now that she has a year of being 1 singles under her belt, I’m hoping that experience helps her gain some confidence this year,” Amundson said of Rohr. “Just putting in the work in the off season, has the girls looking up to her and she will lead by example. That’s exactly what you want out of your one singles.”

Crawfordsville begins it’s season on Tuesday with a trip to West Lafayette.
