BASEBALL: Athenians pick up win over Trojans

Posted

Crawfordsville’s baseball team rebounded from a Friday night non-conference loss to pick up a 6-3 win over Covington Saturday.

The Athenians got eight combined strikeouts and no walks from Henry Taylor and Kale Wemer to move the win total into double-digits for the season, as they now have a 10-5 mark. The Trojans fall to 2-14.

Getting a pair of runs in the first and in the third, Crawfordsville followed that with single runs in the fifth and the sixth.

Austin Motz scored the two times he reached base, and Taylor, Cale Coursey, Andrew Martin and courtesy runner Evan Chaney each scored once.

Taylor had two doubles, Motz and Wemer one each and Martin added a triple as the Athenians had 11 hits for the day against Trojans pitcher Jordan Inman. Bryce Dowell had two singles and two RBI.

Taylor pitched five innings to get the win and run his record to 3-1. Wemer threw the last two and struck out three.

The Trojans got two runs in the second and one in the third. Trace Hammer, Brooks Nicely and Dane Gerling each doubled.

“All the little things are so hard to learn and to apply all the time,” Athenians coach Brett Motz said after the game. “It’s a big transition from Little League to varsity baseball, and it’s a learning process. I’m in that process as much as the guys are. We struggle to understand the game at that next level, even with the work we put in. I haven’t prepared the guys enough to be able to enjoy the game and play at the level we expect for Crawfordsville baseball. You have to be mentally tough to be a good player and a good team. We need and want to progress, but we are just not playing as well as I think we should be.”

Both teams are back in conference action next week. Covington has Seeger and the Athenians have Western Boone.
