BASEBALL: Mounties pick up SAC win

Posted

DOVER — Southmont shutout Western Boone 3-0 for its first Sagamore Conference baseball win of the season on Tuesday night.

Nick Scott tossed a complete game shutout with 12 strikeouts.

“He’s really pitched well the whole time and when we don’t play good defense behind him his pitches pile up early and he obviously can’t keep going. His and everybody else’s arms are getting in better shape now,” Southmont coach Brad Wininger said.

The win is the second in a row for the Mounties, and cutting down on the errors has been the biggest key to recent success.

“We made a couple of changes in the outfield,” Wininger said. “That’s helped catching a few more fly balls. Sometimes it’s just a play or two makes a big difference. Before we’d lose those plays and the flood gates would open.”

Adam Cox, Trip Ward, Mason Hall, and Coner McKinney each had hits for the Mounties, who will welcome Western Boone tonight.

“The Sagamore is tough and there’s a lot of good pitching and it feels good to get that win,” Wininger added about picking up the win.
