Baseball, softball sectionals announced

The completion of the new sectional assignments for school years 2019-20 and 2020-21 were released on Tuesday from the IHSAA. 

New sectionals and some new classifications were handed out to local teams for spring sports, specifically baseball and softball.

Crawfordsville and North Montgomery will remain in Class 3A, but have new sectional opponents.

In softball, the Athenians and Chargers are now paired with Frankfort, Lebanon, and Tri-West in the five-team Sectional No. 25. 

The Bruins last won a sectional in 2018, while the Tigers last won in 2017. Both Lebanon (2016) and Tri-West (2013) have won Class 3A state championships in the last six years.

Crawfordsville last won a sectional in 2008 and North Montgomery in 1993, while Frankfort has never won a softball sectional. 

The Class 3A No. 25 baseball sectional will now feature a variety of strong programs. 

Frankfort, who has won three sectional titles in the last five years. North Montgomery, who won a sectional title in 2018, and Crawfordsville. The Athenians haven’t won a sectional title since 2013, but own a pair of state championships in the last 12 seasons. 

Along with Lebanon, the four Sagamore Conference schools will be paired with Northview and South Vermillion. Northview was the state runner-up in 2016, and South Vermillion won a Class 2A Regional last season. 

Southmont makes the move down to Class 2A and will join Cloverdale, North Putnam, South Putnam and Parke Heritage. The last time the Mounties played in 2A they won a sectional title in 2017. 

Fountain Central stays in Class 2A and will join Clinton Prairie, Seeger, Central Catholic, Delphi, and Western Boone in Sectional No. 38. 

The Mounties softball sectional will mostly stay the same with Clinton Prairie, Delphi, Seeger, and Western Boone in Class 2A Sectional No. 38.

Southmont and Western Boone have won the last two sectional titles. 

Fountain Central makes the move down to Class A Sectional No. 53 with Attica, Covington, Faith Christian, Central Catholic, North Vermillion, and Riverton Parke. The Mustangs search for their first sectional title since 1996.
