Become a Master Gardener and give back to the community, and learn how to keep your lawn, trees, houseplants, etc alive.
If you are interested in gardening, or always wanted to know more about horticulture and are looking for ways to volunteer more in our community, Master Gardeners is the place for you. Master Gardeners are Purdue Extension-approved volunteers to assist Purdue Extension with home horticulture education in Indiana communities.
In Montgomery County, the active volunteer group manages the Seed Library at the Crawfordsville District Public Library, the Summer Garden Club at Nicholson Elementary and the pollinator garden at the fairgrounds to name a few of their efforts.
Purdue Extension is hosting the Extension Master Gardener Training this fall in Crawfordsville at the fairgrounds on Thursdays, beginning Sept. 10 through Dec. 10. The training will take place 5:30-8:30 p.m. (40 hours of education, 14 weeks).
This class covers it all. The basic training course to become a Master Gardener will cover plant science, invasive species, woody ornamentals, pest identification and control methods for weeds, insects and diseases and more topics.
Deadline to apply is Sept. 1. The cost is $175 per adult, $285 for two individuals taking course together, and $40 scholarships are available from Montgomery County Master Gardeners upon course completion and joining the local association of volunteers.
