Bee researcher guest of local club

Well-known beekeeper Krispn Given from Purdue University is the guest speaker today at the monthly meeting of the Beekeepers of Montgomery County. The meeting will take place at Davidson Greenhouse, 3147 E. Ladoga Road, Crawfordsville. A hive inspection is planned at 6 p.m. and Given will speak at 6:30 p.m. It is open to the public.

Members of other beekeeper groups from West Central Indiana and Raccoon Lake have been invited to attend this monthly meeting of the Beekeepers of Montgomery County. Those wanting to learn and get up close for the hive inspection are asked to bring a suit.

Given will speak on queen rearing and honey bee breeding.

Some of Given’s awards and honors include: Behind the Research Honor (2021) Purdue College of Agriculture; President (2019) Heartland Honey Bee Breeders Cooperative; Outstanding Service Award (2015) Purdue University Department of Entomology; Invited participant (2015) Eastern Apicultural Society, Instrumental Insemination of Honey Bee Queens, EAS, Ontario Canada; Recognition, Selection and Insemination of Varroa Mite-Biting Bees Award (2015) Heartland Honey Bee Breeders Cooperative; Recognition and Appreciation, Honey Bee Research, Teaching Queen Rearing and Instrumental Insemination Award (2012) Indiana State Beekeepers Association; Certificate of Achievement, Training National Guard before deploying to Afghanistan, Introduction to Beekeeping, Purdue Honey Bee Laboratory, National Guard (2009) Army National Guard.

Given is a apiculture specialist with the Department of Entomology.

He maintains Purdue’s honey bee breeding program, manages the honey bee lab, conducts experiments and leads bee-related Extension activities.

He has been recognized for developing Indiana mite biters, a strain of honey bees bred with a particular behavioral trait that impacts overall survival.

Given is an invited speaker to numerous scientific and beekeepers conferences each year, and has co-authored extension materials and several scientific papers in science journals.
