Bids opened for Sugar Creek dam removal

Posted

The city opened bids Wednesday for the Sugar Creek low-head dam project.

Proposals ranging from $46,650 to $85,057 were submitted by five companies bidding to remove the dam outside the former Crawfordsville Electric Light & Power plant. The dam is a safety hazard for canoeists.

The interested companies include Hack Excavating, Lafayette; W Enterprises, Crawfordsville; Stanger Group, Goshen; FlatLand Resources LLC, Muncie; and Conexco Inc., Brazil.

Hack and W Enterprises also submitted alternate bids totaling more than $10,100.

The Board of Public Works and Safety voted to take the proposals under advisement. A winning contractor will be recommended after the bids are reviewed.

The project is expected to get underway later this year once water levels have dropped.

In other business, the board approved a $7,500 agreement with Kleinpeter Consulting Group LLC to administer the planning grant for the stormwater and wastewater study.

The city was being approved for matching funds from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs for the study, which will help prioritize future projects, primarily stormwater improvements.

Stormwater projects are planned this year in the South Meadows and Eastern Acres neighborhoods and Traction Road, Crawfordsville Mayor Todd Barton said in his State of the City address.

Stormwater improvements were earlier made to Athens addition, East College Street, Southside Drive and Circle Drive.
