The Crawfordsville Board of Public Works and Safety approved a conditional bid for the city’s wastewater department’s upcoming digester replacement project, bringing the city one step closer to reducing the foul odor many residents have long complained about.

On Wednesday morning, the board awarded a conditional bid to Thieneman Construction in the amount of $3,683,000, contingent upon the city finalizing financing.

The digester lid project plan was originally approved in October last year, with the city working with financial and engineering advisors to establish budgeting and construction plans. The end goal is to improve the efficiency of the wastewater treatment process and improve quality of life by reducing odor. The current digesters were installed in 1994.

The city was awarded a $750,000 Community Development Block Grant through the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs in March and will also use revenue bonds to help fund the project.

A construction date for the project has not yet been announced.

In other business, the board approved a westbound lane closure on East Wabash Avenue between Grace Avenue and Louise Avenue next week. Price Excavating said it will need the closure on either Tuesday, June 16, or Wednesday, June 17, to replace a storm drain.

The board also approved a request from John Swick to close Parke Avenue to Fairview Avenue from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 11 for a car show and from noon to 3 p.m. July 12 for a Touch-a-Truck event.
