Bids for improvements at Milligan Park and for two pedestrian crossing upgrades were opened Wednesday by members of the Crawfordsville Board of Public Works & Safety.

Four companies submitted bids for a project at Milligan Park that is meant to better organize various parking areas, making them more efficient and accessible, as well as paving Joe Allen Parkway through the park.

Bids were received from All American Construction and Hauling of Indianapolis, $725,158; Spencer Construction of Lafayette, $571,379; Milestone of Lafayette, $410,571; and David Price Excavating of Crawfordsville, $282,408.

White Construction of Clinton and Milestone both submitted bids for another city project intended to improve pedestrian safety on Elmore Street and Wabash Avenue. The project includes adding a system that when activated by a pedestrian will require vehicular traffic to stop, allowing pedestrians to safely cross the street.

The improvements on Elmore Street are intended for Acuity employees who frequently walk back and forth between the two plants. On Wabash Avenue, the improvements are intended for Wabash College students who regularly cross that street.

Milestone’s bid was $475,400 and White’s bid was $260,000.

All the bids were tabled for review.

In other business, the board:

• Approved a request from Sam Hildebrand with St. John’s Episcopal Church to allow a roofing company to park their trailer on Whitlock Lane for three to four days at a date to be determined later.

• Approved a request from Wabash College to abate the city’s burn ordinance to allow for a bonfire from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 17 in observance of Founders Day. The bonfire will be set in a sand pit area behind the residence halls and will be supervised.

• Approved a request from the Crawfordsville Rotary Club to sell hot chocolate during the downtown Christmas Parade on Dec. 3. A booth will be set up in front of Sugar Creek Eyecare in the 100 block of East Main Street.

• Approved a request from Gary Fishero, an employee of Crawfordsville Electric Light & Power, to add a streetlight at 2129 Traction Road. This is in the area where Daugherty Lane intersects with Traction Road and was initiated by a citizen request.
