The library’s Summer Reading Program is almost over, but we’ve got plenty of suggestions to keep you reading through the rest of the summer. If you love mysteries, don’t miss Mary’s pick “The Golden Spoon” by Jessa Maxwell (FIC Max). She says this “delicious combination of ‘Clue’ and ‘The Great British Bake Off’ kept me turning the pages all night.” She also enjoyed the popular bestseller “This Bird Has Flown” by Susanna Hoffs (FIC Hof): “Fun romantic fiction! Jane is 33 years old, broke, and single. Can she get a second chance at stardom?” Mischelle was pleasantly surprised by “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo” by Taylor Reid (FIC Rei): “It was nothing like I had expected! An enjoyable read.” This runaway hit is currently in the works to become a Netflix adaptation. Be sure to read it before you watch.

Looking for a fun movie this summer? Dennis suggests the horror-comedy “Megan” (DVD FIC M3g): “A life-like doll becomes overly protective of an eight-year-old girl. Enjoy!” Staff member Megan definitely seconds this recommendation! Love video games? Crystal recommends watching the big blockbuster “Super Mario Bros Movie” (DVD FIC Sup). This one is full of action, fun references to the original game, and the wonderful Jack Black song “Peaches,” which is just fun all on its own! And if you are feeling nostalgic, Dawn’s DVD pick this month is “The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends” (DVD TV FIC Adv): “I loved watching Rocky and Bullwinkle as a kid.”

If you are in need of some self-care, Joni suggests “Queer Eye: Love Yourself, Love Your Life” (155.2 Por). She says “I wish this book existed when I was 16! This is such a refreshing take on health and beauty and a really fun read.” Steph recommends two more self-care books to take control of your health: “No Longer Radical” by Rachel Brem (616.99 Bre) is an essential read for everyone whose lives have been touched by breast cancer and “Dr. Kellyann’s Bone Broth Breakthrough” by Kellyann Petrucci (641.81 Pet) provides information to turn back the clock, reset your scale, and replenish your power.

For our large print readers, Dellie recommends two relaxing reads, “All the Days of Summer” by Nancy Thayer (LP FIC THA) and “Her Forgotten Life” by Maggie K Black (LP FIC BLA). Looking for something with a bit more excitement? She also enjoyed the latest murder mystery in Laura Child’s long-standing Tea Shop Mystery series “Lemon Curd Killer” (LP FIC CHI). Or what about historical fiction? “The Fire and the Ore” by Olivia Hawker (LP FIC HAW) is an 1850s adventure that follows its characters all the way from London to the American west in what Dellie says is quite an interesting read.

Lastly, Susanna shares an old favorite of hers: “Minor characters from Shakespeare’s Hamlet are suddenly thrust into starring roles in Tom Stoppard’s ‘Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead’ (822.91 Sto). This thoughtful, ridiculous, devastating play is one of my all-time favorites.”

All these staff picks are on display on the first floor of the library throughout July and may be checked out with your library card anytime during our open hours: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. Stop in and find a new favorite of your own.
