Track and Field Preview

Charger track and field aiming for steady progress

North Montgomery track and field will always be focused on competing well in the big meets. The Chargers are just about ready to begin another track and field season and will look to slowly build up towards the county, conference, and sectional as Charger coach Josh Thompson has his teams focused on the big picture.

Last season the Chargers girls were a very young team. They featured five freshman and three sophomores along with a handful of juniors and seniors. This season the team will be much more experienced and a year older as the Lady Chargers look to continue to grow. Ella McManomy, Ashlynn Koons, Macee Norman, Katelyn Woolwine along with Taylor Hudson round out the five Charger sophomores with Jovie Simpkins and Hailey Kunz being juniors, and Annabel Anderson, Chloe Douglas, and Ella Fritzen making up the Charger seniors.

The Charger boys will have senior leadership with Paul Lueking, Gabe Shirar, and Owen Utterback, Jacob Rice and Jacob Hughes. Add in juniors Jayden Thompson, Kelby Harwood, Nolan Yarger, and Jack Rogers and the Charger team has the talent to continue to improve as well.

“Our kids have been working really hard to get into shape to have a good season,” Thompson said. “We will continue to focus on County and Conference goals so that the athletes are performing their best at the end of the season.  Our kids are going to compete every chance they get. They will be ready to rise to the challenge that we have in front of them this season.”

Harwood was the lone Charger to advance in the post-season a year ago as he qualified for the Regional in the high jump.

Those big meets that Thompson referenced will begin with the county meet on May 3 which is hosted by Crawfordsville this year. The SAC meet is slated for May 10 at Danville with the girls sectional on May 14 and the boys on the May 16. North Montgomery opens its season on Thursday when they host North Putnam. Their annual Charger Relays are slated for April 12.
