LINDEN – North Montgomery turned up the heat defensively in the second half on the Covington Trojans and enabled the home team earn a comeback 51-48 victory.

The Chargers trailed 23-10 early in the second quarter but was able to close the gap to 31-24 by halftime.

The momentum of the game was dictated by the Charger defense the entire second half. The Chargers held Covington to just 17 second half points, which included a mere seven in the third quarter. Heading into the final stanza, the game was tied at 38 apiece.

“Our guys really picked it up defensively after we fell behind,” Charger Coach Arnold said. “We forced turnovers and I think that was the best defense we have had for awhile. Our guys denied the ball got some steals. I am really proud how they gutted out this win. I am happy for them.”

The Chargers only allowed 10 points in the final quarter forcing several turnovers.

North Montgomery (3-3) received much needed offensive help from Cam Enlow. The junior hit some big three-pointers giving his team some much needed scoring. Enlow ended the game with 14 points.

“Enlow brings something off the bench including scoring and defense and he has been really good for us this year,” Arnold said.

Charger post player Noah Hopkins also scored 14 points and had five rebounds against a much taller Trojan frontline. Kelby Harwood added 13 points.

“Noah had another good game,” Arnold said. “He just plays so hard in the paint. He battles.”

Covington was led by senior Coye Ferguson’s 17 points and seven rebounds.

North Montgomery will participate in the Delphi Classic beginning Monday when they play host to Rossville in a girl/boy doubleheader. The remaining tournament games will be played at Delphi.
