Chargers fall on the road to Cougars

Posted

BAINBRIDGE – North Putnam’s goal-scoring machine rolled on Tuesday night as the boys’ soccer team hosted North Montgomery.

A goal in the first five minutes for the hosts was the start of a five-goal half and though the Chargers had several good looks at goal, the visitors failed to strike as the Cougars won 8-0.

North Putnam got off to a quick start after Matt Farrington scored inside the first five minutes for a 1-0 lead in favor of the hosts.

North Montgomery had two chances to reply in the following five minutes as Nathan Woosley forced Michael Ali to race out for a save while Josh Hunsburger saw a lob over Ali go narrowly wide of goal.

The misses were punished when Nolan Hackleman slotted home a cross from Farrington to double the lead just after 10 minutes of play.

Hackleman was put off on a series of shots by Austin Hunsburger in goal but the Cougar senior eventually struck at the midway point of the half after being sent in by Brayden Neureiter, getting the better of the Charger offside trap before slotting home.

Hackleman would turn provider 10 minutes from halftime, winning possession before teeing up Brayden Chew for a 4-0 lead.

The same combination provided the fifth as Hackleman took a throw in and crossed to Chew seven minutes before the break.

A trio of chances Isaac Polley came and went in the first five minutes of the second half as the hosts came out looking to add to their tally.

Kaden Helderman got the scoring restarted after fighting through the North Montgomery defense to slot home and Hackleman stole the ensuing kickoff, driving right to goal and shooting across goal to make it 7-0.

North Putnam continued to look for the goals to end the match and got the final goal 15 minutes from time as a save from Woosley on one end was sent upfield and put away by Polley to make it 8-0.

The hosts had chances to end the match early via mercy rule but couldn’t add a ninth goal, seeing what would have been the last goal in the final 20 seconds chalked off for offside.

North Montgomery with the loss falls to  0-4 with the loss on the season and will be back in action  on Thursday with a trip to Frankfort barring no changes due to high temperatures.
