Week 8 Football Preview

Chargers head to Frankfort as regular season winds down

The high school football season is beginning to wind down. There’s just two weeks left and there’s still plenty left to play for. Especially for the North Montgomery Chargers. North Montgomery suffered a set-back a week ago with a 38-0 loss to Tri-West. The Chargers turned the ball over seven times as their dynamic offense was shut down. Through seven games the Chargers hold a 4-3 (3-2 SAC) record and will now hit the road for a matchup with the Frankfort Hot Dogs who are 1-6 (0-5 SAC) on the season. Frankfort is coming off a 46-6 loss to Danville a week ago.

Facing a little adversity, North Montgomery coach Josh Thompson notes how the team is back to fixing their mistakes and focusing on themselves in practice this week.

“We didn’t play a very good football game last week and had too many mistakes that were our own doing,” Thompson said. “We have to learn to overcome those and have spent a lot of this week focusing on us and how we can improve from last week. There’s only two games left here at the end of the regular season so we need to focus on making sure that we’re playing our best football at this point in the year.”

Frankfort has trotted out two different starting quarterbacks this season. Senior Doug Wood in three games is 19-45 for 214 yards. Sophomore Dennis Barkley has appeared in all seven games and is 33-70 for 309 yards and has yet to throw for a touchdown along with nine interceptions. On the ground Caleb Boggs is their leading rusher with 99 carries for 322 yards and four TD’s. The Hot Dogs two main receivers include Rolando Castillo who has caught 20 passes for 284 yards and Garek Birge with 21 catches for 183 yards.

North senior QB Ross Dyson has saves his best season for last. Dyson is 78-137 (56.9%) for 1,060 yards and 11 TD’s while having 94 carries for 437 yards and five more scores. Austin Sulc has seven TD’s on the ground. North also has four players in Kelby Harwood, Roman Utterback, Jarrod Kirsch, and Sulc who all have 10+ catches on the season. Utterback leads the team with 26 while both him and Harwood are over 300 yards receiving.

“Taking care of the football is a big priority,” Thompson added. “It doesn’t matter who it is we can’t give the other team extra possessions. Some of our mistakes have been mental errors and that’s what we’re really trying to work on. We’re faced with a little adversity this week and last week was a life lesson and it’s all about how can you respond when your things don’t’ go your way. Life moves on and now we have to put last week behind us and get ready to take on Frankfort.”

If the Chargers come out on top they’ll enter the final week of the regular season with a chance to tie for second place in the SAC. But as Thompson alluded to it begins with the Hot Dogs this week.

Kick off is scheduled for 7 pm .
