Week 2 Football Preview

Chargers hit the road for battle with Huskies

Week 1 is officially behind us on the gridiron and North Montgomery football began the season 1-0 with a 40-16 win over North Putnam last Friday. Now as the Chargers prep for week two, they’ll hit the road for the first time when they make the trip to Arcadia to take on Hamilton Heights. The Huskies are coming off a 26-14 week one win over Lapel.

A season ago the Chargers were able to hand the Huskies just one of their two losses on the season (14-7) as Hamilton Heights went on to post a impressive 8-3 mark.

“The kids are ready to go and are excited coming off of last week’s win,” Charger coach Josh Thompson said. “I’ve been proud of how our kids have handled this week with the heat and our schedule being a little different than normal. It comes down to carry that excitement into Friday to make sure we get off to a good start.”

North Montgomery was led by senior QB Ross Dyson who tallied nearly 300 total yards and five total touchdowns in the week one Charger win. North Montgomery’s offense has plenty of weapons this season as Dyson was able to spread the ball to the likes of Kelby Harwood, Jarrod Kirsch, Austin Sulc, Noah Hopkins and Roman Utterback.

Hamilton Heights in their week one win was led by senior running back Owen Vanhaaren who ended with 170 yards on the ground on 31 carries. Senior QB Bodie Derrer completed 18-24 passes for 149 yards with one TD and two interceptions.

Charger coach Josh Thompson noted what stood out from the Huskies when his team was watching film this week.

“They’re going to do well in both phases of the game on offense and try and keep us off-balance,” Thompson said of the Huskies. They’ve got good size and don’t have nearly as many kids going both ways like we do. I do think we’re in better game shape than we were last week. It comes down to knowing our assignments and playing hard-nosed football.”

The Chargers and Huskies are still scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff but that could change with the expected heat. You can catch a live broadcast of the game on Montgomery’s Counties Country Station 106.3 WCDQ as the trio of Bob Cox, Kevin Kirsch, and Curt Dyson will have the call from Arcadia as the Chargers look to start the year 2-0.
