Chargers ready for more success in year 2 under Voorhees

Posted

North Montgomery baseball saw success in it’s first season under Matt Voorhees a year ago. A 16-11 season was nice, but has Voorhees and the Chargers hungry for more as they begin the 2023 season. North Montgomery returns most of talent from a season ago, most notably 2022 Journal Review Player of the Year Brookes Walters. Walters had a breakout junior campaign batting .494 with five home runs and 28 RBI’s.

The Chargers do lose some seniors from last year’s team in Jakob Kirsch, Max Verduin, Brayden Martin, Nick Norman, and Ethan Gayler. While Voorhees and the team remembers those seniors, he also notes how this team is ready to have more success in 2023.

“We’ve been seeking other leaders and it’s been awesome to see our guys fill in those leadership roles,” Voorhees said. “We’re turning a new page and we’re so blessed to have so many returning starters from last year’s team. We have a ton of depth on the mound with the likes or Jarrod Kirsch, Corbin Meadows, Ross Dyson and others. It’s going to be fun to watch those guys develop as the season goes along.”

Along with Walters, Corbin Meadows, Austin Sulc, Jarrod Kirsch, and Dylan Braun will be the top Charger hitters this season.

In his second season, Voorhees has continued to see the culture of Charger baseball continue to grow. He’s seen his guys really buy in to what he and his coaching staff have been preaching. Combine that with a team that plays for each other and the Chargers have the right tools in place for success.

“I think the unity with our guys has been one of the best things to see in the off-season,” Voorhees said. “They play for each other and constantly pushed and motivated one another during our off-season workouts. We’ve already established a great culture and that allows us to take our skills to a new level.”

North Montgomery opens it’s 2023 season on Tuesday when the Chargers host North Putnam.
