Chargers take home county gymnastics title

NEW MARKET — All three Montgomery County gymnastics teams got together Monday at Southmont for the county gymnastics meet. The meet was the final county matchup of the winter season as the three teams prep for the post-season on Saturday.

North Montgomery put on a display with five of their seven girls placing in at least one event. That allowed the Chargers to bring home the county title with a score of 88.8 points. Southmont finished in second with 79.7, while Crawfordsville took third with 68 points.

On vault there was a tie for first place with North Montgomery’s Dericka Jeffers and Southmont’s Jessie Bradley, both scoring an 8.2. Crawfordsville’s Ellie Hutchison scored an 8.1 to place second, with the Chargers Audrey Cain’s 8.0 finishing third, and Cville’s Helen Doran’s 7.9 taking fourth.

On bars Crawfordsville’s Lily Hummel was the overall winner with a 7.4 and Cain placed second (7.25). Brooklyn Jeffers placed third (7.0), and Dericka Jeffers placed fourth (6.25).

On the beam, Brooklyn Jeffers was the overall winner with her score of 7.55 and Bradley finished second with a 7.5. Dericka Jeffers placed third with a 7.2 and Cain was fourth with a 6.5 as the Chargers claimed three of the top four spots.

North Montgomery also took three of the top five spots in the floor routine with Annabelle Verduin scoring a 7.85. Both Jeffers sisters scored a 7.55 to finish in a tie for second. Bradley scored a 7.5 to take third and Hummel was fourth with a 7.3.

In all around, it was Brooklyn Jeffers took home first with a combined score of 29.9. Both Bradley and Dericka Jeffers tied for second at 29.2, Cain third with a 29.0 and Hummel fourth with a score of 28.95.

An added bonus to the meet was that North Putnam’s Barbie Fuchs, who is the first ever gymnast in North Putnam history, competed alongside the three county schools.

With the county title win, the Chargers claimed four county chase points. Heading into the spring Crawfordsville still remains in first with 38 total points. Southmont is narrowly holding off North Montgomery for second with the Mounties having 24 to the Chargers 22.

The sectional for all three county schools will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Lafayette Jeff  High School.
