Motorists along a portion of County Road 400N from County Road 400W to U.S. 231 need to pay attention to new speed and weight limits coming soon.

On Monday, Montgomery County Commissioners approved an ordinance lowering the speed limit to 30 m.p.h. and the gross vehicle weight limit to 5 tons.

The ordinance states there is an exception for farm trucks transporting grain from the field at harvest directly to the nearest road other than C.R. 400N.

Commissioners cited safety as their main concern for the changes.

“Bottom line is we have to make the road safer,” Commissioner Dan Guard said.

The new limits will soon be posted along the road.

The new ordinance was introduced and adopted after commissioners suspended their rules to pass the measure.

Commissioners also introduced four ordinances establishing grant funds obtained by the county probation office. The grants total $516,609 for drug court, probation, family recovery court and justice partner’s addiction response.

Commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding stating the county will join the Greater Lafayette Region which will administer the State’s Regional Economic Acceleration and Development initiative (READI 2.0). The region the county was previously a member of disbanded earlier this year. The Greater Lafayette Region consists of Benton, Carroll, Fountain, Montgomery, Tippecanoe, Warren and White counties. Cities include Attica, Covington, Crawfordsville, Delphi, Lafayette, Monticello and West Lafayette. Also included in the region are Purdue University, Ivy Tech-Lafayette and Wabash College.

Commissioners appointed John Frey to represent the county on the region’s board of representatives.
