CROSS COUNTRY: Athenians hope to compete for SAC titles

Crawfordsville enters Saturday’s Sagamore Conference meet at Danville as the defending boy’s champions, and have won two of the last three girl’s titles. And the Athenians are hungry for more.

In the boy’s meet it will a four-way race between Crawfordsville, Frankfort, Lebanon and Danville. 

Crawfordsville’s Drake Hayes, Hunter Hutchison, and Eli Widmer have the No. 5, No. 7 and No. 8 top times respectively among individuals competing this season.

“The boys realize it is going to be a tight race,” Crawfordsville coach Megan Craig said. “Every place will count on Saturday. They realize that in order to win we are going to have to see solid running out of all of our boys. There is no room for error in this race.”

Lebanon’s Zachary West has the top time with a 16:29, while Western Boone’s Colton Collier has clocked in a 16:30, and Danville’s Alec Means a 16:44. Hayes top time is a 16:49, while Hutchison’s is a 17:07, and Widmer a 17:12.

Aaron Evans owns Southmont’s top time with a 19:09, and Elijah McCartney owns North Montgomery’s top time.

On the girl’s side, Lebanon is favored, followed by Crawfordsville, and the defending SAC champions in Western Boone. The Stars’ Audrey Knoper owns the top time with a 19:04, while Lebanon’s Murphy Adams has clocked in a race of 19:09, and Crawfordsville’s Madison Fry at 19:22. Halle Smith owns the sixth best overall time for the Athenians with a 20:54. 

“We are a young team, but I still look to see them shoot for a second place finish,” Craig said. “And with good runs from our No. 4 and No. 5 runners we could put some pressure on Lebanon who has a strong team.”

Faith Allen owns the top time for the Mounties and fourth best overall with a 19:30. North Montgomery’s top time is owned by Claire Bonwell.  

The boy’s race will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday with the girl’s to follow at Danville’s Elementary School.
