Curtis Layton Newby, 79, of Ladoga went to be with the Lord on Jan. 18, 2024.

Curt was born Oct. 27, 1944, to Charles and Kate Newby in Ladoga, both of whom preceded him in death.

Curt married the love of his life, his sweetheart, Wendy Horstmann, on Feb. 8, 1969, going on to have three children, Brian (Tami), who preceded him in death, Jodi, and Stephanie. Curt was also blessed with eight grandchildren, Charlie, Shawn, Brie, Trent, Caleb, Marc, Sophia and Kurt.

Curt faithfully attended Calvary Chapel Crawfordsville, where he served the Lord in any way he could. There, Curt forged many deep friendships, but none was more special than his friendship with George Tyo.

Curt was an air traffic controller in the Air Force from 1962-1967. He then began his 48-year career at California Pellet Mill. Curt also worked for both Young Brothers/Moody Meats and Ladoga Locker for most of his life.

Anyone who knew Curt would describe him as the sweetest man, who was the most hardworking, giving, loving, and selfless man. He was also a wonderful storyteller who could keep any room in stitches. Curt loved taking his kids and grandkids fishing. He relished every opportunity to spend time with his family.

Curt was survived by his sister Alma (Bill) Hole, who was his best buddy. He was preceded in death by his siblings Helen Williams, Glen Taylor and Betty Stonebraker. He also had many beloved brothers and sisters-in-law and nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life was conducted Jan. 23 at Calvary Chapel Crawfordsville.
