Doris Mae Davis, 91, of Crawfordsville passed away peacefully March 29, 2024, in her home, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Born Jan. 7, 1933, Doris was raised in Indianapolis and moved to Ladoga in high school. It was there she met her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Jim Davis. Following a first date at the roller rink and her graduation from Ladoga High School, Jim and Doris married Dec. 9, 1950, at Ladoga. Shortly thereafter, Jim was drafted and left to serve in the Korean War, while Doris worked at Indiana Bell.

After Jim returned from the service, they purchased a farm outside of Crawfordsville and started a family. While managing a farm and raising four children with Jim, Doris also worked as a catalog and credit supervisor at JC Penney’s for 20 years and as a tour group organizer at Tri-County Bank for 12.

Most importantly, Doris was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great- and great-great-grandmother. She and Jim were married for 73 love-filled years, and were truly dedicated to each other. They were fond of traveling, and visited 49 U.S. states. She was a skilled crocheter, seamstress and embroiderer; an avid card player; and an active member and volunteer at the New Market Christian Church.

She was devoted to her children and grandchildren, and always made time to visit school and sporting events and to organize family gatherings. Her life was a shining example of Christian devotion, hard work, and resilience in the face of difficulty, and selfless, unwavering love for her family.

When asked about the secret to her long and loving marriage, she said, “We’ve had some hard times and some good times, but we went through all of it together and the Lord looked over us. The Lord has given us a lot.”

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Carl Dickson and Aletha Corrie Dickson; and siblings, Charles (Virginia), Martha, Wanda (Harry), Wilma (Harry) and Vera Lois (Robert).

She is survived and forever remembered by her husband James Davis; sons, James (Carol) Davis of Crawfordsville and Tim (Roxanna) Davis of Jackson, Kentucky; daughters, Sharon (Mitchell) Ferguson of Crawfordsville, and Judith (Kevin) Cunningham of Traverse City, Michigan; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, April 6 at Burkhart Funeral Home, Crawfordsville. Funeral services will start at 1:30 p.m., with Tony Thomas officiating. Burial will follow in Indian Creek Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be given to New Market Christian Church.  Online condolences may be made at www.BurkhartFH.com.
