Dorothy Q Chapter NSDAR

The Dorothy Q Chapter, National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution, met at 1 p.m. Nov. 19 in the Elston Memorial House, with Regent Michele Borden presiding, as she welcomed 13 members and 4 guests.

The meeting began with Terri Fyffe taking the Veterans Service Officers on a tour of the Elston Memorial House after which the four officers began the demonstration on the Ceremonial Folding and Presentation of the Flag. Officer Mike Spencer had an informative presentation on the representation of the 13 folds and proper procedures during funerary services.

After the presentation, all members and guests broke for refreshments provided by Susan Fisher, Phyllis Jones, Pam Allen and Laura Moffat. The delicious spread included fruit and dip, cherry cheesecake bites, brownies, a cheeseball and more.

Returning to the meeting room, Regent Michele Borden opened the meeting beginning the call to order and leading us in reciting, The Pledge of Allegiance, American’s Creed, and Preamble to the Constitution, followed by singing the National Anthem. Rachel Brown then led us in singing You’re a Grand Old Flag.

Gloria White read the President General’s Message, congratulating us all on making it through another year and reminding us all to take a moment during the busiest time of the year to reflect and enjoy each moment with family and friends. Regent Borden then read the National Defender’s report discussing the difference of the times and how music drove some of the new era

Secretary Alexandria Southern then read the meeting notes from Oct. 15 with correction on the birthday for Susan Allen as Oct. 20, minutes approved. Rachel Brown read the treasurer’s report, in which the group discussed the coming year to reinvest. Discussions were, leading to Barb Taylor motion to move the CD that is come due in February to savings. Gay Eagleston seconded and the motion passed.

Rachel Brown then gave the exciting news that the Elston Memorial Foundation now had a new handyman. With some fixes already accomplished more are to be underway. Terri Fyffe mentioned a lovely tour she did for a father and son where the son wanted a guide sent to him after the tour since it was a lot of information. It was mentioned that Fyffe will look into the printing of a docent’s guide and report back to the group. Rachel Brown then reminds the chapter of three ways to donate to Dorothy Q and the school Kate Duncan Smith; Kroger card, Box tops for education and Amazon smile. Then the discussions for where to send the donations for the yearly Veteran’s Wishlist was underway. Susan Fischer motioned to send funds to the local Disabled Veterans. Sharon Southern seconded and the motion was passed. Terri Fyffe mentioned the driveway markers and the do not park sign are set to arrive and be installed

Regent Borden then began with our committee reports.

Banners: Regent Borden is still receiving calls and has filled the waiting list for 2023 and has almost filled the list for 2024. Waveland has shown an interest in the banners and Susan Fisher went to Attica pending approval. Regent Borden on Native American Indians; Borden tells of the spirituality of the Native Americans and their devotion to daily prayer. Especially the silence as silence is the voice of the Great Spirit.

Conservation Report: Sharon Southern reminds everyone that you cannot recycle artificial trees.

Project Patriot: Regent Borden reminds everyone to cut out and bring in manufacturer’s coupons for Rita Kirkpatrick to send off. As Kirkpatrick is still recovering the coupons will temporarily be given to Judy Fifer.

DAR Service to America: Susan Fisher tells everyone that we have logged 1,090 service hours and hands out more logs for everyone to fill out any remaining undocumented hours. Cares and Concerns: The group prayed for Rita Kirkpatrick’s swift recovery from her injuries. Birthdays: Melinda Froedge, Nov. 8 and Kelsey Ondish, Nov. 30.

New Business: Regent Borden takes a moment to remind the group of several upcoming dates and events. Including the decoration of the house “Deck the Halls” on Nov. 27 and taking the wreaths out to the graves of the Revolutionary War soldiers.

Project Patriot: Don’t forget to bring in your short story of your ancestor who served in the Revolutionary War to share and to be submitted to State & Nationals to assist others joining NSDAR.

Reminder: Celebrating NSDAR, Dorothy Q Chapter’s 125th anniversary with an afternoon tea at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 21. Hostess committee: Michele Borden, chair, Susan Fisher, Terri Fyffe and Rachel Brown.
