Dorothy Q Chapter NSDAR

Posted

The Dorothy Q Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, met for our final meeting of the chapter year at 2 p.m. June 17 at the Elston Memorial Home. Regent Michele Borden welcomed 12 members and one guest, followed by the opening ritual.

Mike Spencer, here as the vice president of the Veterans Memorial Park organization, presented a program introducing us to the park being planned to honor all veterans. It will be built just north of the National Guard in Crawfordsville. With pictures of proposed features, including a helicopter and a tank, flag poles and commemorative brickwork, he spread his enthusiasm for this project to us. Thank you, Mike, for telling us about this wonderful plan. A motion was made by Terri Fyffe and seconded by Susan Allen, for the Chapter to buy a brick and amended to add a donation of $250 to the project. The motion passed.

Borden read the President General’s message and the National Defender’s report. Rachel Brown read the minutes of the May meeting for secretary Alexandria Southern, which were approved with one correction. She then read the treasurer’s report, which was filed for audit. A discussion followed about CD rates and the amount that the chapter wanted to invest. A motion was made by Jan Bridge and seconded by Pam Allen to invest in a one-year CD with Edward Jones’ local agent Scott Gambrel. Treasurer Brown and Regent Borden will open an account with Edward Jones this coming week and purchase a CD with the highest rate at that time, followed by an email of information to all members. Motion passed.

Committee Reports:

Banners — Borden reported that the banner printing costs have increased by $5, bringing the total cost to $130. She has begun receiving this year’s applications and pictures.

American Indians — Jan Bridge reported on the contribution made by native American Sacagawea to the success of the Lewis and Clark expedition. This strong woman was essential to this trip.

Conservation — Sharon Southern reported that Germany is the leading country in the world in recycling.

DAR Schools — Brown explained how to download the Boxtops for Education app onto our smartphones to donate to Kate Duncan Smith DAR school.

DAR Project Patriot — We were reminded to cut out and count manufacturer coupons for Judy Fifer, who will send them to service bases.

Dorothy Q Review — Borden read birthdays for June, July and August, since the newsletter will be on vacation until September.

A nominating committee, consisting of Gay Eagleston, Sharon Southern and Susan Allen, was formed for next year’s election of officers.

Borden, Barb Taylor and associate member Terri Branson, attended the 122nd Indiana State Conference in May. Borden read off the many awards Dorothy Q received for our work last year. Taylor accepted the Creedon Award, the highest Good Citizen award at state level, on behalf of our Good Citizen winner, Gabriel Little. We are very proud of you, Gabriel.

After Continental Congress in June, we expect fee increases at the national level for applications, supplementals and the American Spirit magazine.

We are happy to welcome Pam Rager as our newest Dorothy Q member. We are happy to know that a few other ladies have expressed interest in joining us. We want to “Spread the Sparkle” of our love for DAR.

We received a thank you note from the director of the General Lew Wallace Study for our sponsorship of a student for this summer’s ArchiTech Camp. Our chapter house, the Elston Memorial Home, will be part of the walking tour as a superb example of the Queen Anne, eastern stick style of architecture.

Our next meeting will be 1 p.m. Sept. 16.
