Food drives helped keep shelves full

Posted

The season of great joy has brought it to the door of FISH in so many ways. Each contribution of food, money, and other useful goods help to make this season bright. Each of our sites has experienced the generous help from this community.

Donations from food drives big and small have kept our shelves full for December. So many churches and organizations as well as businesses have made an impact on what we have to offer. The financial donations have provided greater access to protein foods. More meat, cheese, eggs and other hearty foods have been available to our 400-plus families. Watching people shop is a luxury I have enjoyed over the holiday. Watching a volunteer help an elderly man shop brought joy to my heart. Now what we must do is sustain the community interest so that January has soup drives and February brings, canned stew and chili. The staples of winter foods need to be on everyone’s shelves.

Since my last message another wonderful thing has happened. Our grant request to the Montgomery County Community Foundation this fall was answered with a generous donation for food, transportation and administrative costs. The MCCF grant will certainly assist our food program to sustain products purchased during the winter. This is testimony to the understanding that the community has to the needs of others. Other wonderful financial donations have been made to support our purchasing over the next few months.

Please look carefully at new clothing and linens you received at Christmas and see if they are replacing still good items that could have continued use in another persons home. Warm clothes and shoes/boots are needed across this community. Household linens may need replacing when they no longer survive their last trip to the laundry. Just be aware that a single bath towel could help someone in Crawfordsville.

As we look to the New Year there are challenges and opportunities. We will meet both of them with the continued caring of a generous community. You have our sincere thanks.
