Ty Welliever led the way for Southmont with 146 yards on the ground. The Mounties totaled 307 rushing yards as a team.
NEW MARKET — New quarterback, no problem.
With Southmont QB Trent Jones sidelined with an injury, senior tailback Cameron Giles filled in and got the Mounties back on track with a 33-12 Sagamore Conference win over Frankfort on Friday.
“I thought Cameron came in and did a nice job tonight,” Southmont coach Desson Hannum said. “Obviously being thrust into that position, for a kid that’s never really played quarterback before, I thought he did a nice job of running the offense.”
The Mounties (2-2, 1-1) scored on their first three possessions to take a 19-0 lead midway through the second quarter, and never looked back.
Giles found the end zone on a pair of QB keepers, and his replacement at tailback, Ty Welliever scampered in from 10 yards out for a first half score. Welliever scored twice on the night, while Giles added a fourth quarter 32 yard touchdown strike to Nathan France to go with his two rushing touchdowns.
Back To Running
After a disappointing effort running the football in a 30-7 loss at North Montgomery last week, Southmont returned to their bread and butter in Friday’s win.
Led by Welliever’s 146 yards, the Mounties rushed the ball 45 times for 307 yards. Giles added 97 yards, and Jake Whitecotton 40.
“It was good to be able to run the ball after last week,” Hannum said. That was one thing we wanted to make sure we did well this week.”
Defense stepped up
Southmont’s defense stepped up, especially in the first half. Frankfort was limited to just 65 first half yards, and only 186 for the game.
Frankfort either punted or turned the ball over on downs on its first six possessions.
“There’s a lot of good things we do there,” Hannum said. “I think we do a pretty decent job of tackling overall.”
The Mountie defense held eight Frankfort plays from scrimmage to negative yards on the night, often forcing the Hot Dogs into second and third down and long situations.
“We haven’t given up the big plays this year like we may have last year,” Hannum added. And that’s a big key there. One of the big keys as well is I think we’ve been able to force some negative plays, especially on those early downs. And that makes second and third down a lot easier when you can force those negative plays on first down.”
Things To Work On
While Southmont performed much better Friday, than a week ago, it was not a flawless effort, and left the field with still a lot of things to work on.
Most noticeably was 12 penalties that tallied up 109 and gave the Hot Dogs a handful of free first downs, including four on defensive pass interference calls.
The Mounties also gave up six plays of 10 yards or more.

Still in search of their first Sagamore Conference win over an opponent other than Crawfordsville since 2015, Frankfort will host Lebanon, while Southmont will host Crawfordsville in a Montgomery County tilt.
