A former Southmont High School teeacher and driving instructor was arrested early Monday morning on a charge of possession of child pornography following an investigation by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
Allen Kray Brown, 64, of Crawfordsville, was arrested after Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a domestic dispute Sunday.
Brown previously worked as a teacher at Southmont High School before resigning in 2018 following an allegation involving one of his driving students, whom he was teaching through his private driving company.
While it appears Brown appeard to still be operatng his driving instructor busines, AB Driver’s Training LLC and was offering September classes on his website, the website was down by Monday afternoon.
The current investigation began when deputies responded to a verbal dispute at 10:38 p.m. Sunday. A 17-year-old male told deputies he discovered Brown had been taking inappropriate photos and videos of him and confronted Brown about the images, according to the sheriff’s office.
Brown admitted to deputies that he had taken the photos and videos, leading investigators to obtain search warrants for his electronic devices.
Investigators seized two cell phones, a trail camera and five computers as part of the investigation. Not all of the devices have been searched, and Sheriff Ryan Needham said additional evidence could be uncovered as investigators continue examining the devices.
Needham said the case was unusual because evidence was presented to investigators immediately, allowing them to make an arrest. He said cases involving child exploitation more commonly begin with tips or referrals from agencies such as the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.
Brown was released shortly after his arrest Monday morning on a $3,000 bond.
The investigation remains ongoing.
This article has been edited to distinguish Brown's separate titles of teacher and driving instructor, as it has not been confirmed that he was a driving instructor during his time as Southmont High School.
