Full council favors proposed commercial vehicle ordinance

Posted

A new ordinance regulating the parking of commercial vehicles, trailers, boats, RVs, and campers on city streets moved one step closer to becoming local law.

On Monday, members of the Crawfordsville Common Council voted 7-0 to approve the first reading of the proposed ordinance. Two additional readings are required.

The proposal would prohibit the parking of commercial vehicles, trailers, boats, recreational vehicles, campers, travel trailers on city streets. However, the ordinance stipulates that temporary loading, unloading or delivery of goods and materials was allowed when actively engaged in repair, alteration, remodeling, or construction.

Furthermore, the ordinance prohibits the temporary parking of RVs, campers, or travel trailers on a public street for a period not to exceed 24 hours.

The ordinance defines a commercial vehicle as any licensed vehicle that exceeds 26,000 pounds. The ordinance does not apply to trailers or semi-trailers, as the city already regulates those vehicles.

Each day a violation remains uncorrected will result in a $50 fine. A second citation is $75 and each citation in excess of two is $100.

The street commissioner also would be authorized to install necessary signage and markings pertaining to the ordinance.

As is customary during the first meeting of the year, the council reorganized and re-elected Andy Biddle as president.

Council members also re-appointed Biddle to be the council representative on the Plan Commission. The term is four years. Furthermore, the council re-appointed Alan Slight to the Board of Zoning Appeals for a four-year term and re-appointed Dan Rogers and Conrad Harvey to one-year terms on the Redevelopment Commission.

In other business, the council:

• Approved a resolution giving the city parks and recreation department approval to seek an INDOT grant for the Sunshine Van program.

• Approved the first reading of an ordinance establishing a READI Grant fund. Two additional readings are needed.

• Approved, on first reading, an ordinance that repeals and replaces City Code Chapter 30 as it pertains to the organization of city government. Two additional readings are required.

• Adopted an ordinance changing the zoning classification for 30 acres of real estate located south of C.R. 150S and northeast of the Purple Heart Parkway Extension and U.S. 231.
