GOLF PREVIEW: Chargers have no varsity returners

The North Montgomery boys’ golf team has no varsity returners after a missed 2020 season.

“There is a lot of uncertainty entering the season,” Chargers’ coach Nick Johnson said. “We are going to be very young and inexperienced. With only one junior and the rest of the team freshmen and sophomores, we will definitely be inexperienced. I am very eager to get on the course and start working with the kids. Seeing what strong areas each player has and what skills need to be worked on.”

North Montgomery will look to Colin Campbell, Landon Birge, Alex Coffman, Thomas Fritzen, Haze Kashon, Noah Barnhart, Drew Norman, and Hayden Turner to all compete for the five varsity spots.

“With being so young this year, I would like for us to be competitive,” Johnson said. “I would like to compete for a county title, but we will see how we progress throughout the season. The biggest hurdle we will have is having a year layoff. I saw some kids out last year as well as early this year, but to get better the kids need to be out on the course everyday working on their game. To overcome the lack of practice we will just have to grind through buckets of balls and spend a lot of time getting their swings right.”

Johnson feels like the Chargers can compete if they can improve their game around the green.

“I would like to see us excel on and around the greens,” he said. “That is the area that we can shave the most strokes. If we can accomplish this it would definitely benefit us. The major weakness we have is the lack of experience. We will need to grow up in a hurry on the course to compete day in and day out.”

North Montgomery opens the season at Rocky Ridge against Seeger on April 12.
