Harold “Sonny” Guy Stockdale Jr., 79, of Waynetown passed Feb. 2, 2024.

Born Jan. 6, 1945, at Crawfordsville, the son of Harold Guy Stockdale Sr. and Ruby Ella (Sewell) Stockdale. He married Judith Lacey on Nov. 24, 1973, and enjoyed 50 years this past November.

He is survived by siblings, Joe (Dianne) Stockdale of Lambertville, Michigan, Dan Stockdale (wife Francine and Dusty deceased) of Wadsworth, Ohio, and Susie Abernathy (husband Scott deceased) of Reno, Nevada; daughter Melissa “Missy” and Jason Holt of Waynetown; grandchildren, Blake Alan Holt and Madysen Ann Holt, both of Waynetown; as well as several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son.

Sonny worked hard on the family farm in Veedersburg that was purchased in 1957 and sold in 1977. He loved to farm and his John Deere tractors, spending countless hours in the fields. He then started working for Bowen Engineering until retirement.

In his earlier years he enjoyed NASCAR racing and was a “Ford Man.” He attended many races with his brother-in-law Bob Lacey and niece Sherry Watson. He continued to attend the NASCAR races at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Michigan International Speedway.

After retirement he was focused on his grandchildren. At a young age Blake began racing an ATV and he eventually transitioned to a dirt bike. He was proud of his talent and traveled all over watching him race, never missing an event. Mady’s love was basketball at a young age. He was consumed with her talent and love of basketball, never missing a game. Both grandchildren were his life and he took great pride in their faith in the Lord.

He never knew a stranger over the years. He loved his church, Hillsboro Church of the Nazerene, as well as his pastor, Gregg McDonald. He was an avid Purdue Boilermaker basketball fan. Family requests any family or friends wear Purdue attire to his visitation if a fan as well, of course not required.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hillsboro Christian Academy.

Visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 8 and 10-11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, with funeral to follow at 11 a.m., all will be held at the funeral home. Procession for interment after to Waynetown Masonic Cemetery, Waynetown. Arrangements entrusted to Shelby & Keller Funeral Home, 622 Third St., Covington.
