Hunt formally selected for council seat

Republicans officially selected former Montgomery County Coroner David Hunt as the newest member of the county council Tuesday in a party caucus.

Hunt, one of four hopefuls seeking an at-large council seat this fall, was the only eligible candidate to file for the caucus, which was called after councilman Terry Hockersmith died Aug. 6. Hunt will serve out the rest of Hockersmith’s term through the end of the year.

“I’m looking forward to getting started,” Hunt, president of Hunt & Son Funeral Home, said as party members left the gathering at the Crawfordsville Country Club.

“Obviously, we’re jumping right into budget time here in the next couple of months and we get that done and then we go to the election cycle so it’s going to be a busy few months for me, but I’m honored to serve and be a part of it.”

As the only person who filed for the seat, Hunt’s appointment passed with a voice vote, Montgomery County GOP chair Dan Guard said. All but three of the 27 precincts were represented in the caucus, giving Hunt more than enough support for the seat.

“I hope he has no problem getting elected in November,” said Guard, who touted Hunt’s experience as an elected official.

Hunt is running alongside Republicans Jake Bohlander and Gary Booth and Democrat Summer Ervin in the council at-large race. Booth is the only incumbent.

The Republican Party will buy print and radio advertisements supporting its candidates in Nov. 3’s election, Guard said.
