IHSAA announces suspension of all athletic activities until July 1

Last week Dr. Jennifer McCormick, the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, clarified that school closures must last through June 30, meaning all school buildings must remain closed for all activities.

On Wednesday the Indiana High School Athletic Association confirmed that all school sponsored activities are suspended through June 30.

“School sponsored activities are any school authorized activities directed, observed or instructed by the school’s coaching staff regardless of the location. This includes any conditioning, skills development and associated activities through the end of June,” the statement said.

Rule 15-3-4 of the IHSAA by-laws provides that a moratorium week shall be observed on the Monday through Sunday which includes July 4. The IHSAA is waiving that rule for the 2020 summer.

Crawfordsville athletic director Bryce Barton said they are unsure how they will handle that week at this time, and says that once activities do resume in July, that all sports will have a chance to participate in summer workouts, and not just fall sports.

Stay tuned for more reaction from coaches and athletic directors across the county in coming days.
