June brings new displays and more to CDPL

Posted

The Tails & Tales Summer Reading program at Crawfordsville District Public Library is now ongoing and there is still plenty of time to sign up and get started at cdpl.readsquared.com (children and teens sign up in person at the Youth Service desk). The library has a reading program for every age group. Don’t miss out on the weekly prize raffles and other summer activities offered and be sure to follow the library on Facebook so you don’t miss out on new programs and library updates.

Interested in the summer reading program but not sure what to read? Please take a look at the displays on the first and second floor. The June Staff Picks display is at the Circulation desk and covers a wide range of staff recommendations.

This month four “New” books have been recommended by staff members. “The Call” by Peadar O’Guilen (YA FIC Ogu) is a new Celtic mythology young adult book. A novel of suspense, “Girl, 11” by Amy Suiter Clarke (FIC Cla), is a twisted and dark thriller. The new young adult release from Julie Murphy, “Pumpkin” (YA FIC Mur) is out just in time for Pride Month. If you were a fan of Murphy’s first two books, “Dumplin” & “Puddin”, you’ll want to read this one as well. I also recommend the new young adult novel “Gone to the Woods” by Gary Paulsen (YA 813.54 Pau) to anyone who enjoyed “Hatchet” or his other survival books. This is a very moving account of Gary Paulsen’s turbulent childhood.

Two staff picks from the non-fiction collection are: “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking” by Susan Cain (155.232 Cai) on the undervalued and misunderstood capabilities of introverts; and “The Illustrated Route 66 Historical Atlas” by Jim Hinckley (917.8 Hin). This atlas covers historic sites as well as current points of interest along the beloved Route 66.

A novel of psychological horror, “The Institute” by Stephen King (FIC Kin), is available in regular and large print. This novel by the king of horror shows that humans can be as evil as supernatural monsters.

“The Host” by Stephanie Meyer (FIC Mey) is a sci-fi romance about life after an alien invasion. This book often gets overlooked due to the hype surrounding the author’s Twilight series for young adults, but in our opinion it is much better.

“Black Sun,” a fantasy novel by Rebecca Roanhorse (FIC Roa) inspired by the civilizations of the Pre-Columbian Americas, and the mystery novel “Flight Patterns” by Karen White (FIC Whi), a story about healing family rifts are both available in regular and large print.

Karen White was the top author of choice for the month of June. “On Folly Beach,” a story of hope, and “The Time Between,” a novel of betrayal and forgiveness (FIC WHI) are available in large print. Also by the same author, “The Sound of Glass” (FIC Whi) is a story of family and healing in the Lowcountry of South Carolina. This novel is available in large print format as well as on CD Book.

Other current displays on the first floor are the local author display and the large print display near the entrance of the library, and the pride month display near the Young Adult collection. On the second floor, the adult displays are “Tales of Tails,” “Wild Wonders,” “In Translation” (summer reading bingo items) and our “Pride Month” display.
