Kobel, Myers meant a lot to their respective teams

North Montgomery’s Kade Kobel and Southmont’s Mia Myers have meant a lot to the Charger and Mountie athletic programs over the last four years, and in return have been impacted by their athletic careers.

“Including this season, I’ve been involved in Southmont track for seven years,” Myers said. “I’ve hurdled and sprinted throughout my career and have been a part of most of the sprint relays as well. For me, the best part about this incredible sport is having the opportunity to push myself and compete individually, but also being part of a team that supports and encourages each other.”

For Kobel, the cancellation of spring sports due to COVID-19 meant a couple of things. No chance to return to the track and field state finals, and with no baseball season — no chance at a 16th varsity letter.

“I had some pretty mixed emotions,” he said. “I was upset, disappointed, and angry, but I knew it was a possibility from the beginning. It hurts not being able to finish your senior year of high school sports.”

Kobel, who is undecided on where he will attend college and if he will play sports, qualified for the state finals in the long jump as a sophomore and as the school record holder in both the 110 and 300 hurdles, was aiming at a triple qualification this spring.

“I was hoping to get a shot at state this year since I battled with injury last season,” he added. “The injury from last year makes the absence of this season that much worse.”

Myers, who also helped the Mounties to three-straight girls’ soccer sectional titles, is thankful for her opportunity to represent Mountie athletics.

“I am beyond thankful to have shared these years with some of the most extraordinary athletes and coaches; they are what truly made my career so special and so memorable,” she said. “Track and Field has shaped me into the person I am today, and I am unbelievably grateful for each moment of each season I have spent on the track as a Mountie.”

Kobel and Myers will both hard to replace for Charger and Mountie athletics.
