Agata Brewer’s new book, “The Hunger Book: A Memoir from Communist Poland,” was published Sept. 29 by the Ohio State University Press.

A memoir about food and motherhood in Communist Poland, “The Hunger Book” weaves together stories of alcohol addiction and violence against the background of Stalinist-era apartment buildings and lush gardens. The book won the 2022 Gournay Prize and has been nominated for the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize. Kirkus Review calls the book “A searing memoir about growing up behind the Iron Curtain, motherhood, addiction, and finding sustenance in the natural world ... A memorable meditation on hunger for food and love, childhood in a totalitarian regime, and resilience.”

To celebrate the publication and hear the author read from her book, come to one of the two launch parties this October. One event will take place at
7:30 p.m. Saturday at Tomorrow Bookstore, 882 Massachusetts Ave., Indianapolis. To attend the Indianapolis book launch, sign up for a free ticket at Eventbrite.

The second event will be in Crawfordsville’s Carnegie Museum at 4:15 p.m. Oct. 20. The book will be available for purchase during both events, and the author will sign your copy. Refreshments will be served.

Brewer was born and raised in Poland. She came to the U.S. in 2002 as a student. She teaches at Wabash College and volunteers as a Court Appointed Special Advocate and as chair of Immigrant Allies, a committee of Humans United for Equality.
