Motz inks first win at helm of Cville baseball

Crawfordsville took an early lead and never looked back to down Seeger 5-2 in baseball on Wednesday night — giving first-year coach Brett Motz, who took over for hall of fame coach John Froedge, his first win as the Athenians skipper.

“There’s no question it feels good now,” Motz said. “Obviously I have so much respect for coach Froedge and what he’s done for the Crawfordsville baseball program, and feel humbled and honored and blessed to be in this position to be able to carry on and do my best to carry on the tradition of Crawfordsville baseball. It’s great having a group of guys to coach — I think they were more excited for me than I was.”

Zach Fichter and Henry Taylor each delivered RBI doubles to give Crawfordsville a 2-0 lead after an inning.

“Offensively, every game situation that we’ve had, we’ve had improvements in being more aggressive in our offensive mindset. The first inning we had guys taking great swings,” Motz said.

The offense was offset by a dominating pitching performance from Cale Coursey. The sophomore struck-out 11 in five innings, allowing just one run.

“There’s no question that Cale setting the tone in the opening frame and just attacking their hitters and hitting spots and at the same time being aggressive in the zone,” Motz said.

Crawfordsville hosts Portage, Michigan on Friday.
