As you know, one of the main reasons for this column every other week is to keep the rich sports history of Montgomery County alive and well. Every now and then I need help in accomplishing that feat and this is one of those times.
I need your help.
Of course I have access to a wealth of information, but sometimes the information needed is buried, lost or just not easily accessible. I am hoping that some of the missing info is laying around in people’s scrapbooks, photo albums, folders, etc.
My most recent endeavor is to try to produce a comprehensive list of players who have rushed for 1,000 yards in a season. Here is the list of names we have come up with so far:
Others who we believe have reached 1,000 yards but we don’t have the exact yardage:
• Darren Myers (SM) 1982
• A.J. Melvin (SM) 1998
• Trevor Hohenstein (SM) 1998
• John Bowersock (SM) 1998, 1999
• Josh Bronaugh (NM) 1999
• Tom Barbee (C)
• Ethan Carpenter (NM)
This is a working list. We are sure that it is missing names. If you know of other players (or additional years for those listed) that should be added, let us know. We want this list to be as comprehensive as we can get it. I am sure the 19 players listed are just the beginning. You may also realize that there are no players listed prior to consolidation. I am sure there are running backs from Crawfordsville that reached that total prior to 1971. There could also be players from Coal Creek, New Market or Ladoga who reached that total as well.
If you have any knowledge or information, please send it to us and once we have completed the list we will publish it. While you are looking through your records, be on the lookout for the following as well: any quarterback who threw for more than 2,000 yards in a season or any receiver who has more than 1,000 receiving yards in a season.
You can send the info you have to me at mocosportsandmore@gmail.com or add it to the list on the Montgomery County Sports & More Facebook page.
