Holiday decorations help make the season bright, but they can also increase your risk of a house fire. Each year, U.S. fire departments respond to an average of 930 home fires caused by trees and other winter holiday decorations. Follow these seven simple tips to help keep your family free from harm.
Inspect lights. Before hanging lights, inspect them for frayed wires, broken sockets or other signs of wear and tear. Test each light string. Only use lights that are approved by a nationally recognized organization, such as Underwriter’s Laboratory or Intertek’s Electrical Testing Labs. Outside, use only lights and power strips approved for outdoor use.
Focus on efficiency and safety. ENERGY STAR®-qualified LED lights provide the same bright colors as conventional bulbs, but they use 75% less energy. LEDs are also cool to the touch, reducing the risk of a fire hazard.
Make the right connection. Avoid connecting more than three strings of lights together, unless the directions indicate otherwise. Don’t route extension cords under rugs or near walkways. Keep outdoor electrical connections off the ground and make sure wiring is clear of downspouts, railings and aluminum siding.
Never leave lights on unattended. Turn off and unplug holiday lights before going to bed and when you’re not at home. Use a timer to switch lights on and off automatically based on your schedule.
Take care of your tree. If you have a real tree, keep it away from the fireplace, vents or other heat sources. Water it every day. Make sure your artificial tree is tested and labeled as fire-resistant. Artificial trees with built-in electrical systems should have a UL label.
Keep exits clear. If there is an emergency, you may need to leave your home quickly. Make sure that your tree or other decorations don’t block exits. This is a great time to review your escape plan with your family.
Dispose of your tree properly. Never put tree branches or needles in a fireplace or wood-burning stove. When the holidays are over, discard the tree by taking it to a recycling center, or have it hauled away by a community pickup service.
