Maple Grove Extension Homemakers

Posted

The Maple Grove Homemakers met at noon July 17 at the Tremaine Park in Waynetown with eight members and two guests present. We received health reports on Betty Jeffers and Minnie Howard. Cards were signed for each of them as well as a birthday card for Claudine Whalen. Carol Crowder also celebrated a birthday in July and we sang Happy Birthday to her.

President Linda Miller reminded us that those who signed up to be a host at the 4-H Building Exhibit Hall during the fair to please be on time when it is your day. Items for the open class are to be picked up July 20. She also thanked everyone who entered the Open Class at the fair. It was one of the biggest Open Classes on record. Janet Fagan received Reserve Champion on her basket, Linda Miller received Reserve Champion on her Native American cross stitch, Judy Tulley entered a basket Judy McBride entered her Fairy Garden and Carol Vice received Grand Champion on her Turtle Craft item. The Indiana State Fair will be held July 28 through Aug. 20.

We collected non-perishable items for the “Stock the Trailer” that was at the 4-H Fair as our community service project for the month. McBride made a motion and was seconded that we get gift cards for our August community project to help families with school supplies. Tulley made a motion and it was seconded that we continue collecting items for the Kids Closet. It was also discussed that our community project for December be gift cards for families at Sommer Elementary School. Vice is in charge of the Reading Books program for children at Head Start. She needs people to help with the turning of pages. Monetary donations to help with the purchase of books for the children would be appreciated. Each child takes home a copy of the book that is read each month.

We will be going to Lavina’s for lunch at noon Sept. 18, which will be our monthly meeting. The cost will be $22 and we need to have our reservations into McBride at our August meeting. Guests are welcome to attend this luncheon. McBride was elected to contact Meg Rosen to have the Waynetown Baptist Church opened for our monthly meetings when the need arises. She is to let Rosen know what months we will need the church to make sure that it does not interfere with anything they may have planned. We all agreed that we, as a club, really appreciate the church letting us meet in their facility.

Upcoming events for the county are: district registration is due Aug. 25 and should be sent to the county treasurer; 6 p.m. Sept. 12 is the fall council meeting at Montgomery County 4-H Building; and on Sept. 13 the fall district meeting will be held at the Covington Beef House.

Maple Grove will have their White Elephant sale at the October meeting, November meeting will be a craft day with soups for lunch and our usual Christmas Bingo meeting will be in December.

Our meeting was closed by the club reciting the collect. We then had our picnic lunch and as always there was a table with lots of good food. We spent the rest of the day having good fellowship and there were plenty of fun stories being told.
