MCMURRY: South gives us fall to remember

Posted

I’ll never forget this fall.

Southmont athletics produced a sports season that we will never forget.

Southmont won four sectional titles this fall, and are poised to compete for a handful more this winter and next spring. Already the 2019-20 Mounties have put themselves in a category with very few other school years.

In the 1985-86 school year Southmont won sectional titles in girls cross country, volleyball, girls basketball, baseball and girls track and field.

The domination in girls’ sports was replicated this fall with sectional titles in golf, soccer, and volleyball. Southmont added a sectional title in boys tennis.

It was the first sectional title in school history for girls golf, the first in volleyball since 1993, and the first in boys tennis since 1991. The soccer sectional was the third straight.

In each sectional championship won, seniors led the Mounties.

Star Lexi Nelson and star Emma Ward were the lone seniors in volleyball and both were difference makers in the sectional.

Led by top goal-scorer Lexie Odum, and defensive stoppers Claire Remley, and Mia Myers, the Mounties continued their domination in girls soccer with a third straight sectional title. A week later the won a regional semi-final game, before falling in the regional final to Park Tudor. The same for volleyball, who lost to Heritage Christian in the regional final.

All five varsity spots in girls golf was made up of seniors — Bailey Thompson, Logan Berrisford, Erin Williams, Carson White, and Lexi Rusk. The Mounties went on to place in the top-10 at the regional.

Seniors Reese Long, Trevor McKinney, and Conner McVay helped lead the Mounties to the regional final, before falling to Terre Haute South.

What the Mounties were able to do was impressive, and I expect this special senior class along with many more contributors to continue on their success in the remaining sports this school year.

Girls basketball and swimming, and wrestling are all sports the Mounties have a chance to compete for sectional titles in this winter. And next spring the softball team will be favorites to repeat as sectional champions.

Southmont’s dominance hasn’t just been in the state tournament, but within the county as well.

Heading into winter sports season the Mounties lead the Journal Review County Chase with 24 points, while Crawfordsville and North Montgomery are both tied for second with 12 points.
