To understand how well the Montgomery County United Band performed Friday in the first round of competition at the Indiana State Fair Band Day, all one had to do was look at former Southmont High School band director Brian Bartlett’s face. He was all smiles as were many others associated with the band.
MCU Director Andy Simpkins was pleased with what he saw and heard.
“I felt that was the best performance of the season,” he said. “Of course that is what we’ve been building up to. We feel good about our chances to advance to the night show.”
The day started for the band with a practice session 7 a.m. Friday.
The awards ceremony is scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m. Friday and that is when the band learns if they are ranked high enough to make the Sweet 16 and perform again Friday night.
“We are hoping for a top seven finish, of course that depends on what all the bands do,” Simpkins said. “We feel we were right there.”
Due to deadline restrictions, final results will not be available for Saturday’s print edition. Look for a complete story online over the weekend or in print on Tuesday.
