FRANKFORT — The scorebook was crowded.
All 19 Southmont softball players saw action in a convincing 21-2 Sagamore Athletic Conference win Tuesday at Frankfort.
“We came out with good energy,” South coach Dan Taylor said. “We hit the ball well, played good defense and the girls took advantage of their opportunities.”
South (3-5, 1-2 Sagamore Conference) chased home nine in the first inning, sending 12 hitters to the plate. That would be all the Mounties would need.
After sophomores Anna Stokes and Jenna Grino walked to start the game, senior Chelsea Veatch lined a shot off the left-center field fence to score both. Walks to Brady Spencer and Mallory Mason were prelude to a triple by Dara Watson. Catie Himes and Grino also had RBI hits in the opening inning.
“(Stokes, Grino, Veatch) just drive our offense. So just getting them in early, getting on base, using their speed gets that turnstile moving at the top of the order.”
The visitors plated six more in the second. Kami Dinius had a two-run double. After a base hit by pitcher Kyndale Rice, Himes launched her first ever varsity home run, an opposite field shot for a 14-1 lead. Veatch later drove in her third run with another double to finish off the inning and give her 13 RBI for the season.
“(Himes) hit her first high school home run, had three hits, hitting in the ninth spot and just took advantage of the opportunity to play.”
South scored four in the third with Stokes driving in a pair with a double. After Taylor cleared his bench, his backups tallied two without a base hit in the fourth and thanks to five walks.
“Everybody contributed offensively and defensively and everybody gets to bat. That’s a fun night for everyone. We don’t change a thing when (backups) are playing. It’s interchangeable parts. Tonight they showed that, They made really good plays. A lot of positions we feel like we just don’t lose a lot.”
The Hot Dogs (0-4, 0-2) tallied single runs in the first and fifth.
Rice went the distance on the mound tossing only 65 pitches, yielded six hits and had four strike outs.
Every South starter had at least one hit and scored a run. Watson also had a pair of singles for a three-hit contest. Himes had a total of four RBI.
The Mounties turn right around tonight and play host to the same Frankfort team at Mountie Field.
“I think we have some deep talent. We have to win every pitch and field every ball. One of our focuses will be are we playing our best softball. We’ve been moving in the right direction.” Wednesday night’s game can be heard on WIMC Thunder 103.9 as Jared McMurry and Codey Emerson will have the call from Southmont.
