NEW MARKET — Southmont ran all over Frankfort in a 42-14 Sagamore Conference win on Friday night.
The Mounties had scoring plays of 49, 54, 62, and 73 yards — taking a 27-0 lead into the half and never letting the Hot Dogs sniff the end-zone until the running clock started in the third quarter.
“I thought we were able to take advantage of some of the things they were trying to do to us defensively,” Southmont coach Desson Hannum said. “Defensively we played well and it was just an all-around team win tonight and the kind of performance we wanted to see this evening.”
Carson Chadd took the Mounties first play from scrimmage to the house for a 73-yard touchdown run, which was followed by a 49-yard touchdown run from Sam Line, a 13-yard pass from Nick Scott to Brady Boller and a 5-yard score from Wyatt Woodall all in the first half.
The defense was just as impressive, allowing no rushing yards on 18 first half carries, and just 70 yards through the air.
“We gave up a few runs there to start the game, but after that point we kind of locked it up and made the adjustments that we needed to and really responded defensively and continued to play aggressive,” Hannum said.
The big runs in the first half by the wing-backs in Chadd and Line set up the tailback in Woodall for a big second half.
“They (Chadd and Line) both had big runs,” Hannum added. “We had multiple plays that were big hitters tonight and we like to see those.
“They were kind of blitzing to our motion there and we ran some counter stuff with him and was able to get some big plays with him multiple times. I thought we did a good job of blocking not only with our line but with our halfbacks of giving the crease there.”
Woodall sprung touchdown runs of 62 and 54 in the second half to put the icing on the cake of a blowout conference win to push the Mounties to a 4-0 start for the first time since 1981. The sophomore carried it 12 times for 168 yards.
Southmont out-gained Frankfort 362-155, including a 335-10 advantage on the ground. The Mounties averaged 12.9 yards per carry as Line tallied 82 yards and Chadd 70.
Frankfort scored on a Jakob Burns 1-yard run and a 16-yard pass from Sam Michael to Vlad Carreras-Lantigua — both in the third quarter.
Michael connected on 8-of-20 passing for 74 yards and a touchdown, while Doug Wood was 2-of-5 for 71 yards.
Frankfort (2-2, 0-2 SAC) had four turnovers and six three and outs in the first half.
Southmont hosts Crawfordsville next week, while Frankfort welcomes Lebanon.
“You play who is front of you, continue to play hard, and continue to game plan and just do what you’re suppose to do. It’s nothing special, just everybody is doing their job and doing their responsebility and good things continue to happen,” Hannum said after the win.
