NEW MARKET — Southmont softball knows its offense is capable of what it’s currently doing. The Mountie bats have officially woken up and on Wednesday they poured on 16 more runs when they defeated Frankfort 16-6 in five innings.
Southmont, as they did a season ago, had a love for the long ball as Dara Watson drilled two in the big win and Kami Dinius hit another out as the Mounties tallied three home runs in the win.
“We had 17 hits again tonight which was even better than Tuesday when we scored 21 runs,” Southmont coach Dan Taylor said. “They’re all really starting to hit the ball hard and find the gaps in the defense. It was great to see Dara not only hit her first home run of her career, but hit her first two. Kami has a lot more pop in her bat than most people give her credit for. Once again it was just great production up and down the entire lineup.”
Frankfort (0-5, 0-4 SAC) wasn’t going to let the Mounties (4-4, 2-2 SAC) walk away with an easy win and came ready to play. They scored six of their seven runs in the first two innings. After scoring two in the first, South responded with seven of their own in the first and four more in the second.
In the two games against Frankfort, Watson went 7-7 as the senior catcher is really starting to see the ball well.
Chelsea Veatch began the game on the mound and struggled with her command walking six Hot Dogs in just an inning and two-thirds. Sophomore Kyndale Rice came in and was able to pitch the final thee and a third innings to pick up the win on the mound.
Anna Stokes, Jenna Grino, Mallory Mason, and Catie Himes along with Rice and Watson all had multiple hits in the Mountie win.
The Mounties aren’t done with Sagamore Conference play this week as on Saturday they’ll travel to the northern part of the county to take on county rival North Montgomery for their first of four county match ups this season. Taylor knows the game against the Chargers will be a fun one for his team, but one that the Mounties can’t take lightly.
“These county games are always intense,” he said. “North is much improved and they’re well coached with coach Earley leading the way. We’re in a position where we know that we have to be at our best in order to play them. Those are the kind of match ups that we look forward to.”
The Mounties and Chargers will get things underway from North Montgomery beginning at 10 am on Saturday.
